About Dr. Held
Professionally, I have been an educator for 30 years and have taught all mathematics classes from the 7th grade basic and pre-algebra classes through 11th grade Algebra 2. I have also taught math classes for local community colleges. My career, except for five years as a school administrator, is about evenly split between middle and high school math classes, along with with some science. Geometry and algebra are my favorite classes and I especially enjoy lessons that bring forth concepts from both simultaneously. I have been recognized for higher than average student achievement and was twice named a Cumberland County Schools Model Classroom Teacher, in addition to having earned National Board certification in mathematics.
Sometimes, kids place a stigma on needing to receive extra help, but are more willing to attend when a good friend or friends come along. Then we have some really great math taking place using the synergy of a small group all disguised as a social endeavor. Naturally, whether one or more students are involved, lessons or assistance is customized to the needs of the students.
Sessions with me can be a review or explanation of homework assignments, analysis and remediation of concepts poorly tested, or skill building. Very often I observe and inform parents that the key reasons for poor math performance is weakness in underlying skills, so we can spend time reinforcing those skills, finding relationships between topics, and learn how math really is sequential and builds upon itself.
I look forward to rewarding sessions with any child that wishes to work in middle grades math, algebra, and geometry. For those who are trying to improve SAT or ACT scores for college admission, I can design and implement a beneficial program there as well, or you can participate in one of my annual workshops.
